Hi Deb! I found out about this message board through the Run Like A Mother Facebook page. I had a question about running while pregnant. I am 5 months pregnant and have been running throughout the pregnancy, often pushing a jogging stroller too. I have loved running even though I am really slow. My problem is that I am now starting to have more pain in my hips and abdomen. I ran 5 miles on Sunday and Monday morning I had a lot of sore muscle pain in my abdomen. Would a belly support band help and if so, what do I need to look for? What other advice can you give to help me to continue running through pregnancy. I have a 5k coming up on the 24th so I really need help to be able to stay in shape for that run. Thanks so much! I am really glad I found out about this forum!

Hi Amy, Congratulations on your pregnancy and making the decision to continue to run through your pregnancy! The soreness you're experiencing is likely due to a combination of the ligaments stretching and the muscles not being strong enough to keep up with the growing baby! A belly support band may offer you some support - there are a number of commercially available ones - and ultimately (kind of like the sports bra discussion!) it comes down to preference. You want one that is adjustable so you can make it comfortable for you - my best advice is if you can't find a "bricks and mortar" store where you can try one on, order one from a site where you can return easily. I would also suggest doing some ab exercises throughout your pregnancy. Simple isometrics (holding your belly button in toward your spine for a count of 3-5), as well as exercises on your hands and knees (cat/camel - arching and rounding your back - but initiate the movement from your lower abdomen and extending opposite arm and leg and holding for 3-5 seconds) will strengthen both your abs and your lower back and hopefully prevent some of the "pregnancy back pain" that everyone seems to think is unavoidable. Listen to your body - running through your whole pregnancy doesn't work for everyone - and even if it worked for one pregnancy it might not for another...so listen closely to what your body and baby are telling you. And if you need to swtich to walking, take heart that you are still getting a great workout for you and your baby and will be back to running before you know it! Good luck - if you have other questions, feel free to contact me through my website - www.beyondbabyfitness.comDeb

Thanks Deb for the advice. I did order a belly support band that other runners recommended, called Gabrialla. I also bought a "no frills" belt to use until the new one comes in. It does seem to help with the comfort factor while running but the muscle pain still came a couple of hours AFTER my run. I will try some of the exercises you recommended. I knew I needed to do some exercises to strengthen my lower abdominals. I think these exercises will be good. Thanks again!
